Flamingos !!!

10 Feb
One Saturday afternoon ,me and H impulsively decided to go on a long drive somewhere … Just as we were leaving from home a picture from the newspaper caught my eye … It was of the pink flamingos that have arrived in the city… Suddenly I was excited … I wanted go see the flamingos …

Now the question was where do we go?Two years back, H had taken me to Sewri to watch the flamingos … They were far off n I could just see that there are some big birds there in the wetlands and assume they are the flamingos… We didn’t have a binocular then … Not even a decent camera … But still my darling had drove all the way there so that I could see the birdies…
But that trip was a fiasco as after driving around for hours also we couldn’t find a spot where we could watch them a little closely so I said we won’t go to Sewri this time and rather find some other place …
So off came the shoes again n we sat back on the sofa with the laptop trying to find a perfect spot … Actually I got no where online there aren’t any specific places mentioned … I was disappointed …Just then  I thought of one of H’s friends who rescues snakes but is also interested in birds … I immediately dialed his no and spoke to him … He was like I know a place where we can see them up close but its a long way from the Eastern Express Highway and the road is small and very rough … I asked him if he was free to join us on this trip n he was all excited … H made a very sad face at the prospect of his car getting dirty n muddy but my pleading look convinced him and we almost ran out of the door , well equipped this time with a good binocular and a nice camera  with 30X zoom ….
We picked up the friend and went on this super bumpy ride along the salt pans ..The roads got narrower and more bumpy …Soon we couldn’t see any other human being or settlement anywhere …and my excitement grew …The friend said that just around the corner we need to park the car and then walk for about 15 min …But as we took the turn to my surprise there were three other cars already parked there but no sign of anybody …The friend told me that this is a very popular spot amongst the ornithologists and journalists but its a well guarded secret because if  lot of tourists started coming here they would disturb the birds and the birds  probably won’t come back here …
So as we walked , my excitement was growing with every step …I was controlling myself hard not to run or talk loudly …I love watching animals and birds and I know the importance of being quiet trying to blend in the surrounding n so I tried to minimize any sound that I was making …
And then all of a sudden we came to this big plain with tall grass growing and in front of this plain was a big expanse of water with the FLAMINGOS …About a hundred of them …All white and pretty (they turn pink if they eat a special type of algae … so i am told) …
All three of us took our place behind the bushes surrounding the water watching them with awe …We clicked some pictures …but mostly were content in taking in the sight with our eyes …We just sat there till the time of sunset and were rewarded with this beautiful flock flying high ( or rather dancing to my eyes ) above our heads for almost 10 minutes …It was amazing …I couldn’t click the pictures of the flamingos in flight but I have that beautiful memory stored in my mind forever …
After the sunset the other people who were there also came out from their places in the bushes and everyone was greeting each other , showing the snaps they had clicked as if we knew each other for a long time …One person was a free lance journalist who persuaded his hobby of bird watching very seriously … He had this big big lens kinda like you see with the journalists clicking pictures during a cricket match …He had clicked these wonderful pictures of flamingos in flight and took my email address saying that he will mail me some of them ( which he hasn’t  yet) …
So after chatting for some time we all left from there …H looked a little sad when he saw his car really muddy …But after he got a big thank you hug from me and he the big happy smile on my face he said that this was worth all the trouble …Awww…
